International and Local Mail Art Competition

The “International and Local Mail Art Competition” held by the Hong Kong Society for Education in Art (HKSEA) last year was a great success. This year, to continue the promotion of mail art and encourage more students from different countries to participate in this event, the format of the competition will be maintained. There will be five age groups in which a panel of judges will award outstanding students first prizes, second prizes and third prizes.

Conditions of Entry:

Deadline:

  • Hong Kong students: 21th October, 2022 (postmark date)

  • Foreign students outside Hong Kong: 24th October, 2022 (arrival date)

 

Who can join?

  • Kindergarten, primary and secondary school students

  • Only participation in the name of school/studio will be accepted

 

Age Groups:

  • Group 1: Born on 1st September, 2016 or later

  • Group 2: Born between 1st September, 2013 and 31st August, 2016

  • Group 3: Born between 1st September, 2010 and 31st August, 2013

  • Group 4: Born between 1st September, 2007 and 31st August, 2010

  • Group 5: Born between 1st September, 2003 and 31st August, 2007

 

How many?

  • Each school/studio as a unit for enrolment.

  • Only a maximum of 10 PIECES of mail art for each age group will be accepted for each unit. Participating works for submission shall be selected by the teacher responsible before mailing.

  • There shall also be 4 pieces of Work of Merit selected by the teacher respectively from among the 10 artworks for submission in each group. This will be done by ticking the Work of Merit box on the artwork label*.

*Please be noted that the final result of the competition may not be equivalent to this suggestion.

Size, Format and Media:

  • Students can create either on an envelope or on a postcard.

  • The size of the envelope/postcard should be at least 90 x 140 mm but not exceed 150 x 200 mm.

  • As only one side of the envelope/postcard will be displayed at the exhibition, please illustrate (draw, paint, etc.) on one side only. Mailing address and stamp shall also be included on the front side of the artwork.

  • Please fill in the following artwork label and paste it on the back of the work. (Artwork label download: click here)

 

  • Various forms of media (including digital art and mixed media works) are welcomed.

  • Students are also encouraged to design/illustrate their own stamps.

  • We welcome freedom of artistic expression, though obscene or indecent content is undesirable.

Delivery:

All the artworks shall be mailed to the following address before the deadline:

 

 

  • ​The artwork should also include : 1. our address on the front side & your return address on the back side of the artwork;2. valid stamp on the front side of the artwork.​​

Competition Procedures:

  • Local selection (for Hong Kong students)

    • Scheduled to be held in mid-November. A local panel of judges will award outstanding students first prizes, second prizes and third prizes.

    • Besides, a maximum of 10 students from each local participating unit (school/ studio) will be awarded a Certificate of Participation. Their works will also be showcased in the Exhibition at Hong Kong City Hall.

    • The list will be announced on HKSEA website in late November 2022. 

Adjudicators of Local Competition (Listed in no particular order) :

  • Ms. Cha Cha CHAN (Hong Kong Stamp Designer)

  • Mr. CHENG Kar-wai (Design director of Monster Workshop, Illustrator, Graphic designer)

  • Mr. Leumas TO (Hong Kong Graphic Designer, Illustrator & Creative Director)

  • Mr. Benny LAU Siu-tsang (Hong Kong Designer & Illustrator)

  • International competition (for foreign students & winners of the local selection)

    • An international panel of judges will award outstanding students first prizes, second prizes and third prizes.

    • Besides, a maximum of 20 students from each foreign participating unit (school/ studio) will be awarded a Certificate of Participation. Their works will also be showcased in the Exhibition at Hong Kong City Hall.

    • The list will be announced on HKSEA website in mid-December 2022. 

Adjudicators of International Competition (Listed in no particular order) :

  • Ms. Chien-Ling LIN (Curator and Founding Director, The Children's Art Museum in Taipei)

  • Professor Glen Coutts (President of InSEA)

  • Ms. Tara (Founder of Éire Mail, the Ireland Mail Art Project)

  • Professor Laurence James Wood (Professor & Associate Head of Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, The Education University of Hong Kong)

Judging Criteria:

  • Relevance to the theme, creativity, composition and drawing/design techniques.

 

Prizes:

  • First prize, second prize and third prize for each age group (both local selection and international competition)

  • The first prize winners of the local selection and the local winners of the international selection will invited to the Award Ceremony of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Education Festival 2022 and will be awarded certificates.

General:

  • Each work should be original and must not be a copy of other works. Students should design their mail art alone. The Organizer reserves the right to reject and disqualify any submission and deprive the award of any selected entries if it finds justifiable to do so.

  • ​No previous publication or participation in open competitions is allowed for the submitted artworks.

  • The Organizer reserves the right to edit, alter, publish, or use any competition entries in any form for exhibition and educational purposes.

  • The list of the adjudicators will be announced on HKSEA website in August 2022.

Application Procedures:

 

For Foreign Schools:

 

  • Before airmailing the artworks to us, please fill in the Online Application Form (Foreign Schools) and email the images of artworks (JPG format with 300dpi) to us by 24th October, 2022 at hkseaorg@gmail.com.

  • Entries shall arrive in Hong Kong on or before 24th October, 2022. Please reserve enough time for delivery.

 

 

For Hong Kong Schools:

 

  • ​Before mailing the artworks to us, please fill in the Online Application Form (HK Schools) and upload the artworks images (JPG format with 300dpi) on Google Drive and share the link in the application form by 21th October, 2022.

 

 *Please change the setting of Google Drive share link to ‘Editor’ for us to download the images.
